United States President Donald Trump issued a stern warning to Iran, stating that severe action would be taken if the country proceeds with the execution of protesters. Trump emphasized the gravity of the situation during an interview with CBS news anchor Tony Dokoupil on Tuesday, January 13, in response to Iran’s plans for mass executions.
Recent protests in Iran aimed at overthrowing the longstanding Mullah regime, in power since 1979, have seen demonstrators facing armed forces with guns on the streets. The protests have resulted in a reported death toll of at least 2,000 individuals, with more individuals facing imminent execution, as evidenced by videos showing body bags at morgues in the capital.
Expressing concern over the escalating violence, Trump emphasized that while peaceful protests are acceptable, the killing of thousands and the prospect of executions are unacceptable. He specifically referred to the case of 26-year-old Erfan Soltani, a clothing shop owner who is set to be the first to be executed following his involvement in anti-government protests.
Soltani, detained in central Iran, was reportedly given a brief 10-minute meeting with his family before his scheduled hanging on Wednesday. Trump further conveyed a strong message to Iranian officials via social media, warning of consequences for any violent actions and assuring Iranian citizens that help is forthcoming.
During the CBS interview, Trump reiterated the support being extended to Iranian citizens in various forms, including economic aid. Referring to past U.S. airstrikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities, Trump hinted at potential future actions without providing specific details. In response, Iran has issued warnings that the U.S. could become a “legitimate target” in the event of strikes.
