Android users are being cautioned to remain vigilant and be on the lookout for a new alarming cyberattack. This latest threat poses significant concerns, as it locks phones once infected, demanding a ransom from users to avoid permanent file destruction.
Identified as DroidLock, the threat was discovered by the security team at Zimperium and is impacting Android users primarily in parts of Europe. The malware is being spread through malicious websites that promote counterfeit applications mimicking legitimate software. Once installed, DroidLock seizes full control of devices, monitoring unlock codes entered by users.
Upon obtaining this data, hackers can alter the code, locking users out of their devices. Some affected individuals have received a ransom demand via a screen overlay, threatening to delete all files unless payment is made. A countdown timer is displayed, indicating the time left to comply with the demands.
Zimperium stated, “The ZLabs research team has identified a new threat campaign targeting Android users. DroidLock, a form of ransomware, spreads through phishing websites. It can lock screens with a ransomware overlay and illicitly acquire app lock credentials, resulting in a complete hijack of the compromised device.”
Although DroidLock has not yet reached the UK, Android users should remain cautious. It is crucial for all Android users to exclusively download applications from official platforms like Google’s Play Store to ensure their safety. Individuals urged to sideload software from websites should verify the developer’s authenticity and refrain from downloading suspicious content.
Exercise caution and be thorough in your assessment before installing any software on your Android device.
