Morten Meller, aged 60, adamantly stated, “No. He cannot do this. We must have our FREEDOM!” while socializing at Daddy’s bar with fellow fishermen. Morten emphasized that Greenlanders are not commodities that can be purchased, expressing a strong sense of national identity and independence.
The sentiment among individuals interviewed by the Daily Record mirrors Morten’s defiance, with many perceiving Trump’s proposals as coercive and viewing him as a menacing figure. The community in Nuuk is vocal in their opposition to any potential American takeover, with a consensus that such an eventuality would be disastrous.
Peter Hessner, a long-time scallop fisherman, underscored the desire for self-governance among Greenlanders. While acknowledging the economic challenges of seeking independence from Denmark at present, Peter emphasized the importance of preserving Greenlandic autonomy and resources for the benefit of its people.
