Sky and Virgin Media TV subscribers will soon find a reduced channel lineup starting tomorrow, with several MTV stations being taken off the air. Channels such as MTV Music, MTV 80s, MTV 90s, Club MTV, and MTV Live will cease broadcasting on December 31. Viewers checking the TV planner will see a message indicating that these channels are now closed.
The shift towards streaming services and decreased viewership of traditional TV has led to the discontinuation of these music-focused channels. Many people now prefer platforms like YouTube and TikTok for their music needs. According to sources, MTV has become a “victim of the rise of streaming,” marking a significant change for the music industry.
Although MTV services in certain regions like Asia, Australia, and Latin America are also being discontinued, MTV HD will remain accessible. The channel will continue airing reality shows like Naked Dating UK and Geordie Shore. MTV has played a crucial role in shaping youth culture and revolutionizing the music industry since its inception in 1981.
In addition to the MTV closures, four children’s TV channels, including Pop, Tiny Pop, Pop+1, and Tiny Pop+1, will also be permanently removed from the listings by the end of the year. In total, nine channels will be disappearing from Sky and Virgin Media TV.
