Norway soccer president Lise Klaveness criticized FIFA’s decision to dismiss a senior official who spoke out against Gianni Infantino’s handling of a controversial World Cup financing plan. Klaveness emphasized the importance of standing up to detrimental directives within the organization.

The removal of FIFA’s chief operating officer, Kevin Lamour, occurred following his public criticism of Infantino’s $20 billion private equity project, which was swiftly abandoned. Klaveness condemned Lamour’s dismissal as an act of intimidation and expressed admiration for his administrative abilities.

In a call to FIFA’s leadership, Klaveness urged them to resist instructions that do not align with the best interests of football, singling out FIFA secretary general Mattias Grafström. She highlighted Lamour’s invaluable contributions to football governance and his unwavering dedication to the sport.

Lamour’s departure marked a significant development in the ongoing crisis surrounding Infantino’s leadership. The backlash from various soccer bodies stemmed from a secretive proposal to sell future World Cup revenues to external investors, a move that was met with widespread disapproval.

Lamour’s public statement on the lack of transparency in Infantino’s dealings sparked further controversy within FIFA, with allegations of deception and disregard for staff welfare. Despite facing repercussions for his actions, Lamour stood by his principles and called for accountability among soccer leaders worldwide.

Klaveness emphasized that Lamour’s exit was a dismissal rather than a voluntary resignation, implying external pressure on the decision-making process within FIFA. She commended Lamour for exposing the flaws in the proposed project and shedding light on the need for transparency and integrity within the organization.

Infantino’s subsequent actions, including a crisis meeting in Morocco and internal apologies for errors, were seen as attempts to restore stability within FIFA. However, Klaveness criticized the management culture within the organization, referring to it as a climate of fear that does not serve the best interests of football.

Prior to the controversy surrounding the financing plan, Infantino was poised for an uncontested reelection as FIFA president. However, the situation has cast doubt on his candidacy, with a deadline approaching for potential challengers to enter the race.
