Notorious drug lord El Chapo is reportedly experiencing concerning changes while being held in solitary confinement at a high-security prison in the United States, according to his former attorney.
Mariel Colón, who previously represented the leader of the Sinaloa Cartel, expressed worries about El Chapo’s mental well-being as a result of his isolation at ADX Florence in Colorado. Joaquín Guzmán, also known as El Chapo, was apprehended in Mexico in 2016 and later extradited to the US.
In a recent interview, Colón described the increasingly strict conditions of El Chapo’s confinement, noting unsettling alterations in the 68-year-old’s behavior. She attributed these changes to the lack of human interaction and absence of external stimuli.
Colón stated, “The US government is subjecting him to inhumane conditions by confining him without any respite. He remains confined in his cell 24/7, completely cut off from the outside world, even deprived of natural light.”
Furthermore, she highlighted that El Chapo is restricted from accessing the prison’s library, engaging in work, or interacting with fellow inmates, and his meals are delivered through a small opening in the door.
Colón emphasized, “He is denied access to the prison’s library, work opportunities, social interactions, or even basic communication with guards.”
According to reports, US authorities are closely monitoring El Chapo due to his history of escaping custody, allowing him only limited time outside his cell each week. His communications and visits are strictly regulated.
El Chapo has petitioned the court multiple times to ease these stringent restrictions, following his convictions for various criminal offenses. The Mirror has contacted the Federal Bureau of Prisons for their input on the matter.
