U.S. President Donald Trump has announced the potential revival of the controversial Keystone XL pipeline project amid ongoing negotiations between Canada and the United States to prevent new U.S. tariffs on Canadian goods.

In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump mentioned the possibility of resurrecting the Keystone XL Pipeline, which was previously halted by President Joe Biden. Trump also shared an AI-generated image depicting him lifting a pipeline labeled “KEYSTONE” out of a grave, with the inscription “Buried by Biden” on a headstone.

While Washington has postponed planned 50 percent tariffs on various Canadian goods for three days to facilitate further discussions, Canada has not publicly responded to Trump’s statement regarding the project’s revival as part of trade talks.

The Keystone XL expansion, proposed back in July 2008 during the administration of Prime Minister Stephen Harper and U.S. President George W. Bush, aimed to extend the existing Keystone pipeline to transport oilsands bitumen from Alberta to Texas. Despite facing opposition and legal challenges, the project has seen various developments over the years, including rejections, reroutes, and executive orders from different U.S. administrations.

The latest update on the Keystone XL saga includes TC Energy terminating the project in June 2021, followed by legal actions to recoup damages and investment, settlements over environmental issues, and Trump’s recent decision to potentially revive parts of the project amidst trade negotiations with Canada.

As of now, the future of the Keystone XL project remains uncertain, with ongoing discussions and developments shaping its fate in the energy landscape.
