A beluga whale, part of the group relocated from Marineland park in Niagara Falls, Ontario, has passed away. Oceanogràfic de València confirmed Jelly Bean’s sudden death less than a month after arriving at the Spanish aquarium. Along with another beluga named Cleopatra and four dolphins, Jelly Bean arrived on August 27 as part of an international rescue effort.
Jelly Bean had faced feeding difficulties recently, leading to increased monitoring by the veterinary team. Despite initial signs of improvement, the whale’s condition deteriorated, resulting in its unexpected death. A necropsy will be conducted by Oceanogràfic’s veterinarians and pathologists to determine the cause of death.
Fisheries Minister Joanne Thompson expressed sadness over Jelly Bean’s demise and extended condolences to the Spanish aquarium staff. The Canadian government had taken necessary precautions to ensure the safe transfer of the whales, including health assessments and permits.
Unfortunately, two other belugas, Peekachu and Rain, had also died shortly after being relocated. Animal Justice highlighted concerns over the stress of moving the animals, emphasizing the need for proactive measures to safeguard their health during transfers.
Marine mammal scientist Naomi Rose had previously raised alarms about the risks associated with transporting belugas, citing potential health complications and stress. The ongoing relocation efforts from Marineland have faced criticism and scrutiny, with calls for increased transparency and accountability in managing the well-being of the marine mammals involved.
