Serita Thurton netted two goals in the first half as the Calgary Wild, currently in last place, caused an upset by defeating the Ottawa Rapid, who lead the league, with a score of 4-3 in a Northern Super League match held at McMahon Stadium on Saturday. Kahli Johnson opened the scoring for the hosts in the 15th minute, followed by Thurton extending the lead to 2-0 about 13 minutes later. Ottawa’s Jung Min-Young found the net in the 38th minute, and Melanie Forbes equalized to make it 2-2 just before the first-half stoppage time. Thurton secured her second goal of the game right before halftime, solidifying the Wild’s lead.
Jorian Baucom also contributed a goal for the Wild, who now have a record of two wins, 12 losses, and two draws. On the other hand, Jyllissa Harris managed to score on a penalty kick in the 86th minute for the Rapid, who now stand at 10 wins, three losses, and three draws. This defeat brought an end to Ottawa’s unbeaten streak of 10 matches.
The Rapid maintained 54% possession throughout the game but were outshot by the Wild 16-13, with the Wild having more shots on target at 9-6. The Wild also took six out of the 11 corner kicks awarded during the match, while Ottawa received one yellow card and one red card.
In another match titled “Rise edge Tides,” Jessica De Filippo scored in the 57th minute to level the game and then struck again five minutes into the second-half stoppage time, leading the Vancouver Rise to a 2-1 victory over the Halifax Tides at Swangard Stadium in Burnaby, B.C. Jordyn Rhodes had initially put the fourth-place Tides ahead with a goal in the 19th minute.
The Rise, positioned in fifth place, controlled 56% of the ball possession and outshot the visiting Tides 18-13, with a 6-4 advantage in shots on target. The Tides managed to secure four out of the six corner kicks in the game, while the Rise received two of the three yellow cards issued during the match.
