Jurors were presented with an audio recording of Duane (Keffe D) Davis stating that his nephew Orlando (Baby Lane) Anderson was the one who fired the fatal shots at rapper Tupac Shakur in a 2008 police interview. Davis, who claimed to have been in the car with Anderson during the incident, is facing allegations of orchestrating the 1996 murder of the 25-year-old rap icon in Las Vegas.
During the interview with the Los Angeles police, which took place after his nephew’s death, Davis recounted that he and Anderson were in a white Cadillac with two other individuals when they pulled up next to a car containing Shakur and Death Row Records head Marion (Suge) Knight. Davis mentioned that he would have taken action if the car positioning had been different, but instead, he passed his gun to Deandre “Big Dre” Smith, who declined it. Subsequently, Anderson, seated in the back, grabbed the weapon and opened fire, as described by Davis in the recording.
This marked the first time Davis directly addressed his role in the shooting with authorities, with the interview playing a crucial role in the prosecution’s case against the 63-year-old. Prosecutors emphasized Davis’s admissions in police interviews, podcasts, and his 2019 co-authored memoir, “Compton Street Legend,” as key evidence.
While Davis has pleaded not guilty, his attorney dismissed the prosecution’s version of events as fictitious and criticized the lack of evidence supporting Davis’s statements. Initially, Davis was a suspect in the unsolved 1997 shooting death of Shakur’s rival, the Notorious B.I.G., but was later cleared of involvement.
The prosecution argued that Davis violated confidentiality agreements by publicly discussing the shooting in various mediums years later. Allegations suggest that Shakur’s murder was a retribution for an earlier altercation where Anderson was attacked by Shakur’s entourage, a situation that Davis witnessed but did not partake in.
