Celine Dion is gearing up for her upcoming five-week residency in Paris by sharing more insights into her battle with illness and the treatment she has undergone. The renowned Canadian singer revealed in an exclusive profile with Harper’s Bazaar that she had been experiencing symptoms of stiff person syndrome for 17 years before receiving an official diagnosis of the rare neurological autoimmune disorder in 2022.
The excruciating pain, which intensified in 2020, often left her struggling to walk on some days, leading her to rely on a high dosage of Valium for relief. Stiff person syndrome is a progressive condition that tends to worsen over time, affecting only a small percentage of the population. Its symptoms, including muscle rigidity and painful spasms triggered by stress or sudden movements, have no known cause or approved treatment, although various therapies can assist in managing the condition.
Prior to her diagnosis, Celine Dion would attribute show cancellations to minor reasons like coughs or sinus infections, concealing the true extent of her suffering. She expressed feeling a sense of dishonesty towards her loyal fans who had supported her career and enabled her to seek comprehensive treatment.
Following the diagnosis, Dion made the difficult decision to cancel all remaining shows, with her last public performance dating back to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. However, she aims to make a return to the stage in September. Her recovery routine involves a combination of medication, physical therapy, vocal therapy, and immunotherapy. Additionally, she dedicates herself to 90-minute Pilates sessions three times a week and ballet classes twice a week in preparation for her forthcoming shows.
Described as always on the move, Celine Dion fears becoming immobile again and views her recovery and the prospect of performing as a miraculous opportunity that she deeply appreciates. Feeling strong, excited, and slightly nervous, she is eager to make her comeback. Dion’s Paris residency, featuring 26 concerts from September 12 to May 29 next year, marks a significant milestone in her journey back to the stage.
