A significant Pacific Ocean warming event known as “super” El Niño or “Godzilla” El Niño has returned, impacting global weather patterns during a period of heightened temperatures across many regions. Record-breaking heat waves in July have resulted in numerous heat-related fatalities, dried-up waterways, and extensive wildfires, including in Canada where over 4.1 million hectares of forest have burned, causing widespread smoke cover in the eastern part of the country and parts of the northern U.S.

While this summer coincides with the onset of El Niño, climate experts clarify that the phenomenon is not solely responsible for the extreme weather events observed. However, they caution that the interaction between El Niño and human-induced climate change could intensify existing extreme weather conditions.

According to Josh Willis, a climate scientist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, the impacts of El Niño are expected to be extensive across a vast area, signaling a turbulent period ahead.

El Niños naturally occur every few years, beginning in spring and extending into the following year as ocean temperatures in the Pacific rise significantly. This warming alters atmospheric conditions, causing shifts in weather patterns globally, with regions experiencing either increased rainfall or prolonged dry spells.

The ongoing El Niño, potentially on par with historical powerful events, could lead to a warmer winter in Canada and the northern U.S., affecting precipitation patterns. Meanwhile, the southern U.S. may expect higher rainfall levels. The phenomenon has already triggered noticeable effects in tropical regions, such as threatening fisheries in Peru and Ecuador.

El Niño’s influence is also evident in the Atlantic hurricane season, with fewer storms expected due to altered atmospheric conditions. The Eastern Pacific region has witnessed an active storm season, with several named storms, including Hurricane Genevieve and Tropical Storm Lala, causing significant impacts.

The combination of this El Niño event with the backdrop of ongoing climate change poses unprecedented challenges, potentially prolonging its effects well into the next year. Climate scientists emphasize the need for continued research to understand the complex interplay between natural climate phenomena and human-induced global warming.
