U.S. trade envoy warns Canada against retaliatory actions in response to President Trump’s tariff threat. Greer stated that any retaliatory measures from other countries would not be tolerated, and the U.S. would take appropriate action.
Recent discussions between Canada and the U.S. have intensified following Trump’s plan to impose a 50% tariff on numerous Canadian products from August 19 onwards, in addition to existing sector-specific tariffs. Greer described the ongoing negotiations with Canadian Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc as productive, noting Canada’s inclination towards a more conciliatory approach.
Industry insiders familiar with the trade talks indicated that Canada perceives the August 19 deadline as critical, emphasizing that further negotiations could be jeopardized if the tariffs are implemented. Greer reiterated the U.S.’ commitment to prioritize American interests in trade policies while expressing openness to align with Canada if mutually beneficial. Trump and Prime Minister Mark Carney are expected to be presented with options ahead of the looming tariff deadline.
Canada aims not only to prevent the impending 50% tariff but also seeks resolutions on current tariffs affecting sectors like automobiles and steel. Both sides received a new U.S. proposal that offers some reduction in sectoral tariffs, albeit falling short of Canadian expectations.
Bloc Québécois Leader Yves-François Blanchet expressed skepticism about an imminent deal and cautioned against compromising on dairy negotiations amidst escalating U.S. demands. Greer highlighted various trade issues with Canada, particularly emphasizing concerns over alcohol bans and retaliatory tariffs.
Former Canadian ambassador to the U.S., Frank McKenna, countered Greer’s stance, asserting Canada’s right to defend itself against unjust measures. McKenna criticized the notion of unilateral actions by the U.S., asserting the importance of fair and lawful trade practices.
