Erlinda Tan, a Filipina Canadian residing in Vancouver and an Edmonton Oilers enthusiast, reminisces about her introduction to hockey during the 2010 Winter Olympics. Witnessing the thrilling final match where Sidney Crosby clinched the golden goal against the U.S. left an indelible mark on her. The nationwide celebration that ensued, with jubilant honking cars and people singing “O Canada” everywhere, deeply impressed her as a recent immigrant from the Philippines.

Moved by the unity displayed by Canadians through hockey, Tan’s interest in the sport was piqued. Attending her first live game in 2014 between the Edmonton Oilers and Anaheim Ducks, she was engulfed by the electrifying atmosphere at Rexall Place. Immersing herself in Edmonton’s hockey culture, she observed the fervor surrounding the Oilers within the city, recognizing hockey’s significance beyond just a sport.

As Tan settled in Vancouver in 2016, she met Mike, a devoted hockey aficionado, reigniting her passion for the game. Their shared love for hockey, evident through special game-night dinners and jersey collections, became a cornerstone of their relationship. Embracing their differences, they found harmony by exploring each other’s interests, from hockey to tennis, fostering a bond built on mutual respect and compromise.

Attending hockey games at Rogers Arena in Vancouver became a cherished tradition for the couple, blending their allegiances to the Canucks and Oilers. Their contrasting team loyalties symbolize the harmony in their relationship, encapsulated by the phrase “Love conquers all.” Tan’s journey from a newcomer captivated by a historic hockey moment to an avid fan entrenched in Canadian hockey culture exemplifies the sport’s ability to unify, spark conversations, and deepen connections, shaping her personal narrative of integration and belonging in her adopted country.
