The film “The Odyssey” continues to dominate the box office, having accumulated $1.1 billion US in revenue since its release on July 17. Directed by Christopher Nolan, this Greek epic adaptation marks his highest-grossing film to date, excluding inflation adjustments, surpassing his previous milestone set by 2012’s “The Dark Knight Rises.” Nolan’s other notable works, “The Dark Knight” and “Oppenheimer,” also achieved impressive financial success, with the former raking in $1 billion US and the latter falling just short of the billion-dollar mark at around $975 million US.

Meanwhile, the recent release of Sony-Marvel’s “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” exceeded expectations, grossing $1.67 billion US globally after a remarkable $360 million US debut weekend. This achievement places the film among the top-grossing movies of all time, breaking records previously held by Marvel productions like “Avengers: Endgame.” “Brand New Day” now stands as the highest-grossing movie of the year, following closely behind “The Odyssey” and surpassing “Toy Story 5” in box office earnings.

As “The Odyssey” prepares for its official launch in China this Friday, the anticipation is high, especially with reports indicating a substantial Imax screen rollout in the country. The growing demand for Imax technology globally has been evident, with the format gaining popularity in Hollywood and becoming synonymous with event cinema, as seen in blockbuster releases like “Avatar” and Nolan’s “Oppenheimer.”

With “The Odyssey” being the first movie entirely filmed in Imax, Nolan’s close ties with the technology have significantly contributed to its success. Both “The Odyssey” and “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” have played a pivotal role in revitalizing the box office post-pandemic, with ticket sales exceeding previous years. Industry forecasts predict summer theatrical revenue to hit $4 billion US, a milestone indicative of Hollywood’s thriving business and audience engagement.
