Balsam firs in New Brunswick are undergoing a concerning transformation, with the trees exhibiting red foliage and experiencing mortality following a severe drought last summer. Professor Anthony Taylor from the University of New Brunswick, specializing in forestry, has been witnessing the adverse effects on woodlot owners and the trees firsthand. The iconic evergreens, popularly used as Christmas trees, are gradually reddening, drying out, and perishing due to the aftermath of the extreme dry conditions.

According to Prof. Taylor, the current scenario aligns with his observations from previous hot and dry summers, emphasizing that the balsam firs’ growth is significantly hampered by warm and arid weather patterns. He has extensively researched the impact of climate change on New Brunswick’s forests and noted similar die-offs of balsam firs after exceptionally hot and dry seasons in 1986 and 2018.

The trees respond to drought stress by prematurely halting the photosynthesis process, impeding their growth potential. Taylor explained that this interruption in energy production diminishes their capability to sustain vital functions and produce defensive compounds, leaving them susceptible to further stressors like insects and pathogens, ultimately leading to increased mortality rates.

The shallow root systems of balsam firs exacerbate their struggle to access water during prolonged dry spells. Peter McKeil, a woodlot owner, has observed the distressing effects of the drought on his trees since June, witnessing a progressive reddening from the lower branches upwards. Despite salvaging some trees for lumber, McKeil has adapted his harvesting practices to maximize the remaining fir’s value before more succumb to the environmental pressures.

Expressing concern over the fate of the balsam firs, McKeil expressed skepticism about the species’ survival in southern New Brunswick, attributing their decline to the worsening impacts of climate change. He highlighted the need for adaptation or potential migration of these cold-weather trees to more favorable habitats as a coping strategy.

The visible red hue of the affected trees serves as a grim reminder of the repercussions of climate change, serving as a tangible indicator of the shifting environmental conditions. Taylor emphasized the urgency for climate action, stressing the importance of transitioning away from fossil fuels and sustainable forest management practices to mitigate the escalating effects of climate change on the region’s iconic balsam firs.
