Grandparents assisting with childcare during the February half-term could potentially increase their state pension by £6,600. If you are below state pension age and providing care for your grandchildren, you may be eligible for Specified Adult Childcare Credits. These credits, a form of National Insurance Credits, can help fill any gaps in your National Insurance record. Research indicates that each transferred credit can add around £330 to your annual state pension income, potentially resulting in nearly £6,600 over a 20-year retirement period.

To qualify for these credits, you must have been below state pension age (currently 66) while caring for a child under 12 years of age, or up to 17 years if the child is disabled. There is no minimum hourly requirement for eligibility, so even occasional childcare can qualify. Claims can be backdated to 2011.

Parents must receive Child Benefit to transfer their National Insurance Credit to the grandparent. It’s essential for parents to ensure that their own National Insurance record for retirement is not affected by this transfer. Besides grandparents, other relatives like aunts or uncles who regularly care for children can also make a claim.

Most individuals need 35 qualifying National Insurance years to receive the full new state pension, which is currently £230.25 per week. You typically need a minimum of ten years to qualify for any pension. Claiming Specified Adult Childcare Credits requires filling out form CA9176 on GOV.UK, signed by both the caregiver and the parent transferring the credit.

Data from a Freedom of Information request to HMRC shows a substantial number of applications for these credits over recent years, emphasizing the importance of raising awareness about this benefit. Jon Greer from Quilter highlights the significant value of these credits and calls for increased awareness, especially among lower-income families and communities where National Insurance record gaps are more common.
