A father, who battled and overcame leukemia but tragically lost his wife to the same disease, is advocating for a shift in societal perspectives towards cancer. Brett Harman, a voice actor from Spalding, South Lincolnshire, was diagnosed with leukemia at 27 after experiencing back pain and infections. Aggressive chemotherapy led to remission within four months, and he has remained cancer-free since. However, his life was further impacted when his fiancée, Hannah Stinson, was diagnosed with sarcoma in 2021 while pregnant with their daughter, Summer. Despite Summer being born healthy prematurely, Hannah succumbed to the disease two years later.

Now a single parent to his daughter, Brett reflects on his own leukemia diagnosis in 2015 as a pivotal event that instilled resilience in him to navigate the subsequent challenges. Recalling the initial shock and transition to hospitalization for chemotherapy, Brett acknowledges the profound impact on his life and outlook for the future.

Following successful treatment, Brett returned to work and planned a life with Hannah. Their joy of expecting a child turned somber when Hannah’s sarcoma diagnosis surfaced during the pregnancy. Despite the challenges, a dedicated medical team ensured the safe delivery of their daughter and Hannah’s subsequent remission, allowing them to savor normalcy briefly.

Tragedy struck again when Hannah’s cancer relapsed, leading to her passing from sepsis in 2021. Brett praises her unwavering bravery throughout her battle and fulfilling her last wish of caring for their daughter. Embracing his role as a single parent, Brett finds solace in honoring his promise to provide the best life for his daughter and navigating their new life together with resilience and pride.

Supporting his family through his escape room business and voice acting career, Brett has transitioned from teaching, leveraging his talents to sustain his household. Engaging in projects like the Part of the Story campaign, Brett narrates an audiobook challenging the narrative that cancer defines one’s identity. He emphasizes the importance of destigmatizing cancer to inspire hope and resilience, especially for his daughter’s generation.

Listeners can access the audiobook through the Part of the Story campaign page, reflecting Brett’s commitment to advocating for a positive outlook amidst adversity.
