Virgin Media O2 users are being warned about a rising scam involving fake call center numbers generated by AI. The telecom company has raised concerns over a significant increase in people falling victim to these fraudulent schemes. Millions may have already been deceived into dialing these bogus numbers, leading them to cybercriminals seeking to steal sensitive information, such as financial details.
Recent findings suggest that approximately 13% of UK consumers have encountered fake customer service numbers through search engines or AI platforms. Criminals are exploiting advanced AI technologies to display counterfeit contact information for reputable brands, luring unsuspecting individuals into divulging personal data for fraudulent activities.
As more individuals rely on AI-generated search results, hackers are leveraging this trend to deceive users. To combat this threat, Virgin Media emphasizes the importance of verifying service numbers only from official sources like company websites, applications, or billing statements. Contacting O2 can be swiftly done by dialing 202 from an O2 device, while Virgin Media customers can reach out by calling 150 from a landline.
It is crucial to exercise caution when encountering numbers from search engines, social media, or AI tools. Additionally, individuals should refrain from sharing security codes or personal information with unsolicited callers, regardless of their claimed affiliation.
Murray Mackenzie, Director of Fraud Prevention at Virgin Media O2, highlighted the risks posed by sophisticated AI tools enabling the creation of realistic fake numbers. The company is actively taking measures to safeguard customers, including blocking known scammer numbers and employing AI to flag suspicious calls. To combat scammers effectively, the public is encouraged to report suspicious numbers to 7726 for prompt action against fraudulent activities.
