A resident in Margate, Matt Shoul, has taken measures to secure his wheelie bins due to recent changes in waste collection regulations. Shoul claims that ongoing issues with bin collections have led some individuals to use their neighbors’ bins for disposing of trash.
Various councils, including Thanet District Council, have implemented a new recycling scheme this year to comply with the government’s ‘Simpler Recycling’ guidelines. The new system involves weekly food waste collections and alternating fortnightly collections of general waste and recycling.
As a result of the disruptions, some households have experienced overflowing bins for extended periods. Shoul believes that the inconsistent collections over the past three months have encouraged people to resort to dumping waste in neighboring bins.
Shoul expressed his frustration by stating that he had to lock his bins to prevent others from utilizing them improperly, as it hampers his ability to recycle effectively. He highlighted the unreliability of the collection service, with residents sometimes waiting beyond the scheduled timeframe for waste pickup.
Cllr Steve Albon, the Thanet cabinet member for cleansing and coastal services, acknowledged the inconvenience caused to residents and assured that addressing these issues is their top priority. Thanet District Council explained that service disruptions were due to ongoing adjustments and challenges faced by crews, exacerbated by periods of extreme heat.
