Infections caused by a common virus are on the rise, leading several NHS trusts to declare a ‘critical incident’ due to a surge in hospital admissions. Recently released weekly data from NHS England, dated January 15, showed an average of 567 hospital beds occupied daily by patients exhibiting symptoms of norovirus in the previous week.

This represents a 57% increase from the previous week’s average of 361 and marks the highest number of norovirus patients recorded this winter. The virus spreads rapidly, emphasizing the importance of understanding how to minimize risks associated with it.

Jason Murphy, the head of pharmacy at Chemist4U, emphasized the ease of norovirus transmission, noting that only a small amount of the virus is needed to cause illness, and it can survive on surfaces for an extended period. As cases continue to escalate, he stressed the need to go beyond basic hygiene practices and implement targeted measures to safeguard oneself and those in proximity.

Norovirus should not be underestimated, as it is highly contagious and persistent. Jason highlighted two key aspects in dealing with norovirus: preventing its spread and supporting the body during the course of the virus. While there is no cure for the virus itself, there are various ways to manage symptoms effectively and reduce potential complications like dehydration.

Jason provided advice on preventing norovirus, managing symptoms, and aiding recovery, including treating it as a resilient infection that requires specific cleaning supplies, being cautious with bleach dilution, handling vomiting as an exposure event, isolating affected individuals, prioritizing rehydration, managing symptoms with pain relief, and considering anti-diarrhea and anti-nausea solutions appropriately.

He also recommended consuming simple, bland foods when appetite returns, getting plenty of rest to support the immune system, and following a treatment and prevention plan diligently to protect oneself and others from norovirus. With proper support and adherence to these guidelines, recovery from norovirus is typically successful.
