Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney has disclosed that he has a hearing impairment in his left ear and discussed the challenges he faces due to this condition. The 40-year-old made this revelation during a segment on Match of the Day, where he shared how it affects his work as a pundit. Rooney, who was analyzing the recent match that showcased United’s impressive win over Manchester City, had never publicly mentioned his deafness before, leaving the timeline and extent of his hearing loss unknown.

During the show, Rooney asked a crew member from the BBC, which produces Match of the Day, to place an earpiece in his right ear instead of his left due to his hearing issue in the left ear. He explained that he struggles to hear clearly when there is excessive noise. Rooney, who recently signed a lucrative contract with the BBC to appear as a regular pundit, also launched his own podcast after a break from management but has not ruled out a return to coaching in the future.

Rooney, introduced as ‘John Rooney’s brother’ by presenter Mark Chapman, praised Manchester United’s performance in the match against City and highlighted the team’s display of their traditional attacking style. He commended Michael Carrick, the interim manager, for his understanding of the club’s ethos and culture, emphasizing the importance of having ex-players involved in the team for their insight and connection to the club’s values.

The former England captain’s insights on the match and his perspective on team dynamics were well-received by viewers. Rooney’s contributions as a pundit have added depth to the analysis of football matches, earning him a respected position in sports media commentary.
