According to recent research, Transylvania and Baku have emerged as unexpected travel destinations that Brits are keen to explore this year. The study also reveals a growing interest in lesser-known places like Rovaniemi in Finland, Panama City, and Nuuk in Greenland, despite recent geopolitical discussions.

Sardinia in Italy takes the top spot on the holiday wish-list, followed by Madeira in Portugal and Scotland’s Outer Hebrides. The list of popular destinations for summer vacations includes Lapland in Finland and the island of Gozo in Malta, offering a mix of traditional and unconventional choices.

Transylvania, known for its association with Count Dracula, ranks 15th on the list, while Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, also makes it to the top 30. The survey indicates that 43% of respondents are open to exploring new holiday spots, signaling a growing preference for unique travel experiences.

Younger generations, particularly Gen Zs born between 1997 and 2012, exhibit a strong inclination towards offbeat destinations, with 67% expressing a desire to venture off the beaten track this year.

While affordability plays a role in travel decisions, with 24% citing cost as a factor in choosing lesser-known destinations, the research highlights that Brits prioritize enriching and memorable experiences over budget considerations.

Nearly half of respondents (44%) opt for lesser-known locations to create lasting memories, viewing it as an opportunity for a more adventurous and fulfilling holiday experience, rather than a typical vacation.

While cost remains a key factor, 80% of participants believe that the value of a holiday extends beyond its price tag, encompassing the overall experience, cultural immersion, and the sense of fulfillment it provides.

Adam Bullock, UK director at TopCashback, emphasizes the importance of finding value in travel experiences, stating that joy and lasting memories are key components of a rewarding holiday, transcending mere affordability.
