Deciphering the correct disposal method for various items can be a perplexing task. Takeaway containers, in particular, often pose a dilemma once the meal is consumed. The debate on where to discard these containers has been settled by a binman who shared insights on TikTok under the username TheNo1 Binman.

In a recent video, TheNo1 Binman clarified that takeaway boxes should not be placed in recycling bins as most councils do not accept them. This includes pizza boxes, which, despite being made of cardboard, become non-recyclable once contaminated with grease. While some councils allow pizza boxes in compost bins, it is advisable to confirm the specific guidelines in your locality.

The misconception extends beyond pizza boxes to items like burger wrappers and bags, which are not typically recyclable. The general rule, as explained by TheNo1 Binman, is to dispose of these items in the general waste bin. Clean paper bags can be an exception, but if soiled, they should also go in the general waste bin.

Similarly, kebab boxes fall under the category of items destined for general waste disposal. Unlike paper or cardboard containers, polystyrene containers should never be placed in recycling, regardless of their condition.

While some individuals claim to have successfully recycled cardboard pizza boxes, the issue arises during processing when contaminated materials hinder recycling efforts. Therefore, even if collected, contaminated items are unlikely to be recycled at processing facilities.
